Specialist tracks

At McKinsey, you can specialize in eight functional areas: Business Technology, Corporate Finance, Marketing & Sales, Operations, Organization, Risk, Strategy, and Sustainability. In the Amsterdam office, we have strong Business Technology, Operations and Organization hubs. More details about what it means to directly join one of these practices are listed below.

Business Technology Office (BTO)

What does BTO do?

McKinsey’s Business Technology Office (BTO) helps clients with their strategic, organizational & operational technology and IT problems. Questions in the client’s mind on typical BTO projects include:

  • What IT/ technology strategy should we pursue?
  • What organization supports our strategy best?
  • How can we increase efficiency and effectiveness of the projects in our technology/IT portfolio?

What is the difference between a generalist and a BTO consultant?

As a BTO consultant, you follow the same career path as a generalist. The only difference is that you spend—50% of your time on BTO engagements. This gives you the opportunity to build in-depth BTO knowledge and be part of our BTO community while at the same time working on projects in other functions.

What is the difference between McKinsey BTO and other Technology consultants?

Since we do not develop and sell IT software or systems ourselves, McKinsey’s BTO can maintain a fully independent perspective. In addition, the diversity of our backgrounds and nature of the other, non-technology-related, projects we work on, allows us to combine a top management perspective with in-depth business and technology knowledge.

Operations Practice (only for experienced professionals)

What do you do as a McKinsey Operations consultant?

Our Operations consultants work on a full array of operational topics, from Service Operations to Manufacturing to Product Development. What makes our approach distinctive is, amongst others, that:

  • We can bridge the gaps between Operations and Strategy,
  • We develop a customized approach for each unique client situation, and
  • We build our clients’ capabilities.

What is the difference between a generalist and an Operations consultant?

As an Operations consultant, you follow the same career path as a generalist. The only difference is that you spend the largest share of your time on engagements in Operations. However, you also have the opportunity to work on other engagements, like Strategy or Organization. We have a separate European staffing pool for our Operations consultants, which helps you find the projects that fit your development needs best.

How large is the Operations Practice of McKinsey?

McKinsey has the broadest and deepest Operations expertise of any consulting firm. We have done more than 5,500 operations projects worldwide in the last 5 years and have 400+ experts with relevant real-world experience.

Organization Practice (only for experienced professionals)

What does the Organization Practice do?

The Organization Practice helps clients improve their organizational effectiveness in order to execute their strategic and operational agendas. Almost all client engagements at McKinsey either explicitly or implicitly deal with organizational issues, ranging from full-blown performance transformations with talent and leadership development programs, to situations where organizational thinking enhances the project’s impact.

What kind of knowledge and skills do you need in the Organization Practice?

To help our clients, we draw on thinking from disciplines ranging from economics to psychology. Our service lines cover talent and leadership development, transformational change, merger management, organization design and organization diagnostics. Within the Organization Practice we have practitioners with a background as generalist consultant, and specialist colleagues with a deep organizational spike.

How large is the Organizations Practice?

In the last 5 years, we have carried out more than 8,000 organization engagements, more than half of which were in Europe. Our experience in organization consulting spans a wide range of industries including financial institutions, global energy & materials, healthcare, consumer goods & retail, and high tech & telecoms. We serve our clients and support our Client Service Teams (CSTs) with almost 400 consultants worldwide and a dedicated research group of more than 20 colleagues.
